expert support for women in all stages of motherhood

WITH THE RIGHT HELP, YOU WILL FEEL BETTER.

CAROLYN WAGNER, MA LCPC - psychotherapist AND MATERNAL MENTAL HEALTH SPECIALIST

You're here because you are ready to feel better.

You may have found yourself here looking for support with a specific problem. Or you may not know exactly what is wrong, but you just know life isn’t feeling good anymore. I’m guessing you’ve been working on this issue for awhile now. Maybe it got better for a little bit but then went back to how it was. Or maybe nothing you’ve tried so far has worked.

You’ve grown tired of spinning your wheels. You’re not willing to just wait it out any longer. You’re seeing how your struggles are impacting so many different aspects of life and you’re over it. Whatever it is that brought you here, I’m glad you found me.

You’re in the right spot.

How I work

At the core of my approach to therapy is a belief that we each hold an innate capacity for healing.

Women often come to therapy with me seeking to get rid of a part of themselves. Perhaps it’s the perfectionistic part, the part that rages at her family, the part that just doesn’t seem cut out for motherhood, or the part that her own mother can’t stand. But here’s the thing: all of those parts serve a purpose, even if right now they seem to be causing us nothing but pain and heartache. They aren’t bad. They are usually trying to protect some other more wounded and vulnerable part of us. So instead of trying to get rid of them, the task of therapy is to try to understand what those parts are doing, why they’re doing it, and then heal whatever it is they’ve been protecting. That is the way out of pain and into the life we all deserve to be living.

I believe that this healing happens in the context of a supportive and safe relationship. My role as your therapist is to develop that relationship with you and then hold that safe and supportive space as your mind, body, and spirit do what they do best: heal, transform, and grow.

I won’t promise that this will be easy. But I can promise to be there with you until the mess is clear. You aren’t alone in this.

things you should know about me as a therapist

I’m very active in therapy.

That’s the therapist way of saying I’m definitely not the type to just sit and nod my head. Your therapy sessions are for you and about you, but I’m going to be right in it with you. Sessions with me are not overly structured, and I’m not a homework giver, but we’ll keep things lively and interactive.

I’m pretty casual.

You’re probably going to see me wearing t-shirts with a cozy blanket in my lap most of the time. I take our work very seriously, but I think therapy works best when everyone is comfortable. I show up as my true self because how else could I expect you to do the same? I’ve been known to tear up when my clients share big things. I’ll share something from my personal experience when appropriate because it’s important for you to know that I’m a human in this with you. You get the real me in sessions, not a stuffy “blank slate” with lots of head nodding.

My care for you is real.

Research has shown that the most important factor in the success of therapy is the quality of the relationship between the therapist and client. That means that our connection is paramount and it’s why I do not practice as a generalist. I know the types of clients I can connect with, and therefore help, best (new moms, moms struggling with issues arising from emotionally neglectful childhoods, or moms grappling with difficult relationships with their own mothers). While our relationship is a professional relationship, it is important that you know the care I show in session is genuine and heartfelt.
